The process of manipulating and sharing information from one location or individual to another is referred to as communication. Communication may take place through a variety of means. There may be acoustic, electromagnetic, visual, tactile, or biochemical channels (Kanefsky, 1985). Communication is critical to the health and prosperity of every company. The type of entity, i.e. whether it is efficient or not, is determined by the type of contact between the boss and the workers. And when the intended receiver understands the sent message does effective contact occur. Effective cooperation within every organisation aids in the development of both employer and employee trust. Effective communication being a major and essential component of any organization has several importance. Some of the importance are as discussed below.
Good 1. relationships.
Effective communication helps in developing strong and firm relationships among members of any organization. It gives room and confidence to the employees to share their ideas and views easily and freely. It also encourages socializing which helps foster good and strong relationships among members of an organization (Simon, Hinedi & Linsey, 1994) . Communication helps in building teamwork and prevents employees from feeling isolated. Once a strong relationship has been achieved, the employees are then able to work together and trust each other. Deficiency of open communication will create a non-socializing organization which at the end will kill the good and strong relationship within the organization.
2. Employee trust
Effective communication is mainly geared towards achieving a clear and open communication between members of an organization. This help in creating transparency hence building trust within the organization. It helps in creating trust and making the employees feel valued. This boosts their moral which leads the organization towards achievement of its goals (Smillie, 1999). Absence of effective communication will lead to lack of trust in the organization since the employee will feel isolated. It also kills the employees’ moral leading to poor performance.
3. Teamwork
Since communication helps foster good and strong relations among members in an organization, it therefor creates room for collaboration and teamwork. This enables the employees to share ideas and resources freely in the organization, which makes a more productive team. It can also lead to more and better innovations since there is collaboration among employees, which helps in development of the organization. In the absence of effective communication, there can be no teamwork and trust within the organization. It can also result to poor service and product delivery to the customers.
4. Minimise problems and mistakes
Effective communication is a remedy to problems and mistakes within the organization. The employers have a role of ensuring that the employees’ expectations are clearly and precisely stated to them in order to achieve a positive feedback (Kanefsky, 1985). It also helps in improving customer relations since the employees are clearly equipped with skills on how to handle the customers. Where there is no transparent communication, there will be more mistakes and omissions in the process of service delivery within the organization leading to lose of customers and eventually may lead to collapse of the organization.
Effective communication is also essential to the managers and helps them in performing the basic managerial functions. The managerial functions are; controlling, motivating planning and organizing.
Development and prosperity of any organization is highly dependent on trust among employees. Trust among employees can only be achieved and developed through effective communication. Communication can help develop trust in the following ways;
1. Transparency
Effective communication helps improve and encourage openness between members of an organization. Effective communication also enables the employees to know their roles and duties within the organization, this therefor develops and natures the relationship between the manager and the employees. Transparency also helps to bring together individuals within the organization.
2. Effective listening
Listening is a major part of effective communication. In a situation where by the manager gives more time to listen to his/her employees, the employees will be more open, more creative and innovative. This helps in ensuring prosperity and development of the organization. The manager needs to make himself/herself to the level f his/her employees. This also helps to build the employees moral.
3. Feedback
Feedback is also an essential technique in communication. It is important that the manager encourages feedbacks from hi/her employees. Through doing this the manager will gain the employees trust (Smillie, 1999). In organizations where employees are given room to give their opinions and feedback, they feel appreciated and recognized making them work and deliver services wholeheartedly.
Conclusion
Communication as discussed above is a major and critical part of organizations success. The managers of any organization should aim at achieving and creating an open and free working environment and enhance effective communication which in turn will foster trust among employees within the organization to ensure success of the organization.
