Feminism is described as a collection of initiatives aimed at ensuring equality in society for all genders, free of sexism. Feminism maintains that members of all genders are not discriminated against in their culture. Feminism teaches us that women should be self-sufficient and that everyone should play some part in society without discrimination. “Feminism Types and Definitions: Liberal, Socialist, Cultural, and Radical – Video & Lesson Transcript | Study.com”, 2017. Feminists agree that thoughts for achieving equality should be put into motion in order to affect progress. Also, they argue that both men and women should be given equal opportunities and also freedom in developing their interests and talents. There should be strict laws to promote education and equal job opportunities for women. According to feminists, women should be empowered with enough information so as to have control over their reproduction and sexual life.
Feminist theory has three different categories. These are liberal, social and radical feminism. According to liberal feminism, women should be in a position to nurture their talents and practice their interests in the society. This approach believes that all the present gender inequalities are caused by the negative attitudes possessed by the society. Liberal feminists work towards increasing the opportunities for women and also fighting for their rights in the society. They believe that the government laws do not give equal opportunities to women as compared to their male counterparts and therefore fight to create equal opportunities for women through the constitution. Socialist feminism believes that most governments only concentrate power in the hands of few men. This approach feels that women are not considered of any use in political and economic matters. Women in the society are given roles of staying at home and raising their children while men take part in the development of the economy and also in political matters. Socialist feminism, however, helps in ending the capitalist economic system which promotes gender inequalities in the society. This approach helped in bringing back the confidence in women who were oppressed due to their skin color. Most women were even forced to sterilization in the hospitals due to lack of adequate information. Social feminism, therefore, supported women from different backgrounds in realizing their roles and rights in the economy. (“Feminism Types and Definitions: Liberal, Socialist, Culture & Radical – Video & Lesson Transcript | Study.com”, 2017) This helped them in raising their voices in the prevention of any kind of oppression and also enabled them to know their rights in participating in political and economic matters in the country. Women have therefore become great leaders in the society with bright visions even more than me.
Radical feminists argue that most men in the society are the source of women exploitation. This is because most men believe that women should only perform the home duties which do not require any pay and they should not access positions of power and influence in the society. Most men usually don’t believe that women can be good politicians or can be educated enough to hold senior positions in the society. Women do not have a position to give out their views in the society and therefore most decisions even those affecting them are made without their opinions. This kind of belief is deeply rooted in the society and therefore it needs a lot of efforts to end it and this can only be achieved through creating a society which is gender-free. (“Feminism Types and Definitions: Liberal, Socialist, Culture & Radical – Video & Lesson Transcript | Study.com”, 2017) This will ensure that women are able to go to schools and enhance their participation in political decisions and also fight for their equal opportunities.
In conclusion, feminist theory believes in the fact that women should be given equal opportunities in the society to develop their talents and interests. Also by empowering women with the right information, they can be able to control their sexual life. Given the opportunity, women can make good leaders in the society just like the men and can help in decision making.
