Engaging in purposeful interaction with clients, staff, and supervisors means that an organization aims at decentralizing the command system. Therefore, engagement ensures that the stakeholders invest their resources like time to add some value to an organization and their team. Purposeful interaction allows for a productive workplace since people feel joyful and improve on efficacy due to positive experiences. Also, the company morale can be developed through increasing positive interactions that consider the employees’ talents, workloads, and personality traits. Lastly, there is consumer satisfaction when businesses create policies that align with clients’ mindsets; this ensures employees are knowledgeable and passionate when interacting with customers.
We can demonstrate warmth, positive regard, and non-judgment through overly accepting the client and disregarding personal opinions or biases. Isolation of a person’s behavior from the person him/herself ensures that there is unconditional positive regard. Acceptance is crucial, especially for a social worker as it promotes person-centered counseling which creates openness and removes authoritarian nature.
The skills that we need to possess include controlling facial expressions, body language, voice pitch and tone, and personal space or physical boundaries. Facial expressions show our feelings, and they are the most obvious cues. Body language is involuntary or done on purpose depending on the strengths of emotions; hence, it is an essential skill for communication. Voice pitch and tone depend on the mood, and their changes alter the meaning of the message. Personal space allows showing the interest we have on others. Thus, we need to invest in listening, non-verbal signals, clarity, friendliness, confidence, empathy, picking the right medium, and open-mindedness.
