Suppression is described by Siemer, Mauss, and Gross (2007) by looking at the way people hold back their feelings when faced with various circumstances. The authors conclude that the way people view circumstances can decide the feelings that people experience. For that reason, people who respond in a positive way to circumstances would portray positive emotions as opposed to people responding in an adverse way. The causes and effects, including psychological and emotional problems, have affected people’s lives, particularly health issues. Most people express their feelings and appear to be from an emotional point of view (Siemer, Mauss, & Gross, 2007). Psychology, on the other hand, is known to be one of the most complex attributes of human anatomy that time and time again prove to be challenging to understand (Baumeister, Dale, & Sommer, 1998).
The specific variables, discussed in this article, include emotions and their appraisals. The authors wanted to know the relationship that existed between the two variables since they affect social life and their psychological state. Consequently, learning more about emotion appraisal will aid a reader to understand how to manage it such that it does not affect people physically and mentally.
To conclude, the most significant finding in the article is that anyone suffering from any emotional and psychological distress should not suppress it. Also, emotion appraisals determine the type of reaction and emotion a person will feel, basing on how the individual tackles the situation. Despite having similar emotional appraisals, people tend to react differently to situations, and the results depict that the sentiment also differs. People need to understand that the similar situations do not conjure similar reactions because individuals appraise the emotions differently.
