Oil is an essential product in the life of people. Every part of the globe depends on oil products in different ways. Similarly, the government get high profits from the sale of oil and petroleum products. One impact of dealing with oil is to enhance a better life of the people. This includes getting fuel for vehicles and other means of transport that uses engines. Secondly, petroleum products have a wide range of use to the people (Ecology 1). Most of them are used in homes to supply diverse needs such as cooking and lighting and jelly. Therefore, oil is a crucial part of human existence.
The environment receives numerous effects from the use of oil and its products. One form of environmental impact is the pollution of the atmosphere. The burning of oil or its products leads to the emission of various gases which are not friendly to the natural environment. Some of the emissions include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide. Carbon dioxide is known to cause global warming as it is a greenhouse gas. On the other hand, sulphur dioxide leads to the formation of acid rain after mixing with the rainwater. Acidic showers are harmful to both water animals and plants.
Oil is responsible for the death of marine life. The animals living in the water are subjected to lack of air when an oil spill occurs. Oil spills lead to covering the surface of water bodies such as rivers, lakes, oceans or seas thus preventing air from getting into the water (Ecology 2). The cover leads to the suffocation of the animals and plants living beneath the surface. Marine life depends on the small plants growing underneath the surface. Therefore, these lives become endangered by the presence of oil on the surface. Oil forms a cover which is impermeable by air. Thus, such lives perish if the spills are not cleared quickly.
Oil spills often happen and affect the environmental conditions of the rivers, seas and oceans. Most of these spills originate from vessels and tankers transporting the product to different parts of the globe. Others happen through accidents involving ships. The impact of an oil spill can be measured from a mild level to a widespread catastrophe involving marine life. Another significant source of these spills is the natural seeps from the ocean floors. All these sources lead to a significant impact on marine life where these animals either die or have to move to other places where they feel is safer (West 2).
One effect of an oil spill is the endangering of both marine animals and plants. At some point, surface oil spills get to the rocks and sand grains. These can be drifted to the plant roots of mangroves and other vegetation which absorbs the oil. The outcome of this absorption is either the death of the plant or contamination of the food chain especially those plants which are food for animals. Also, some of the light oil reaches a point and begins to sink. The outcome of the process is that it coats marine animals and plants which slowly causes their death (West 2). The good categories become contaminated such that they are not fit for consumption.
The marine departments of every country are responsible for taking care of any cases of oil spills. They are highly equipped with the technology and skills to handle any form of spills on water bodies before more significant impacts are felt. Additionally, every organization involved in either digging oil wells, transporting or shipping is advised to employ any necessary measure to prevent any form of spills. Such companies are also held responsible and charged if any spill is reported involving their cargo ships or trucks (Greenstone 3). Therefore, the whole process is the responsibility of both experts and oil companies.
Technology in the Oil Industry
Three forms of technology have been adopted towards making the oil industry more profitable and efficient. The first one is the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The importance of this technology is to help in pinpointing the areas that are subject to inefficiency within the production process. The oil and gas industry highly benefits from this form of technology as it becomes a source of accuracy and improvement in the performance level (Medal 2). Efficiency and profitability is the key to surviving in such a delicate and competitive industry.
Secondly, the industry is benefiting from the use of robotics. A robot is made in such a way that it can efficiently perform the tasks assigned to any level of employee. The advantage of using this technology is that work is continuously done since the robots do not need to rest. Oil companies employ the technology to aid in fixing challenging and dangerous areas of the company such as the connection of drilling pipes (Medal 2). Although there is a continued fear that the technology will replace human labor, companies continue to prefer it due to the reduced costs of operation.
Finally, the industry is making use of cloud computing technology. This is a form of advancement which promotes the storage, access and analysis of different kinds of data relating to the industry. Cloud computing enables field workers to optimize their production levels through integrated empowerment easily. This technology also helps in analyzing huge data loads in shorter periods thus increasing the efficiency of the company. The storage capacity is also enlarged such that there is almost unlimited capacity for a company’s data (Medal 3). Risks of data hacking are completely minimized such that the organization operates in a highly secure platform. This change has led to increased performance.
Government Role in Oil Industry
Oil companies have a duty of establishing good relationships with different governments. Oil and its products can transform the nature of a country to either right or worse state. Governments play a critical role in establishing strong markets for the oil companies operating either in their countries or outside. One primary purpose of a government is determining the prices of oil and other related products. The determination is based on the needs of the people as well as the extra costs involved in the transportation and process of the oil. Another role is setting the guiding rules for the industry (Lemieux 2). Every business requires a legal framework under which it has to operate. Finally, the government engages in business negotiations with other countries to ensure that their oil companies get sufficient markets. The process involves providing that the entry regulations for such states are flexible enough to allow the trade and the prices are set to encourage profit accumulation.
