Big data technologies have received significant attention in healthcare system due to their ability to handle high volumes of datasets as opposed to traditional methods. Big data mining tools and predictive model designs provide a framework that drives at better decision making in healthcare (El Aboudi & Benhlima, 2018). The databases perform batch and stream processing which improve the quality of healthcare delivery and culminate in cost savings. El Aboudi and Benhlima (2018) indicate that big data facilitates diagnostic, descriptive, prescriptive and predictive analytics. Large datasets are generated at high velocity.
The article relates to computer applications within the nursing career as it describes how medical professionals including nurses can improve patient care through computing of big data. In the field of nursing, the computing technology is a landmark in providing quick assistance and reduces waiting time. Big data increases variability which is essential in nursing and makes it easier to analyze complex datasets. Nurses use data emanating from many devices which is later transformed into actionable knowledge in healthcare delivery. Nurses that are computer conversant can process information using computers. Thus, they are able to provide and deliver quality patient care (Sewell, 2016). The advancement in computer algorithms and processors allow nurses to carry out data mining and produce datasets that create actionable outcomes.
The journal was found in BioMed Research International database after searching the words “the use of the database in healthcare.” The search was limited by specifying the field of healthcare and year of publication which was to be in the past three years. From the search, the database provided twenty-five results. Majority of the journals closely related to the application of database in healthcare. El Aboudi and Benhlima’s (2018) article was selected because it deeply explains how big data is significant in healthcare systems. The document has an in-depth analysis of the database architecture, requirements, and implementation in healthcare. Besides, it is a recent publication, and this means that the information is more authentic and conforms to the current changes in the healthcare system along with the use of the database in the nursing profession.
