Introduction
There are numerous views and opinions that have been raised regarding gay marriage. The debate on whether the gay marriage should be legalized or not has become very controversial (Arroyo 186). The human rights guarantee the homosexuals the same rights as the heterosexuals. Every individual should be granted same-sex rights without discriminating one on the basis of sexuality. According to this document, gay marriage should be legalized.
Moreover, there are some reasons why the same sex is feeling that their marriage rights should be authorized. One of the major and mostly heard reasons is that they want to have their affection by being issued a marriage certificate. The homosexuals argue that they are in love and they want to spend their time with the person they love. Despite the fact that they can do this without marrying, they claim that they want to honor their relationship in the greatest way that is offered in the society. The second reason that the homosexuals raise, is based on the human rights document. Their claim is that they are cheated on the existence of the human rights. The reason being, if two people love each other and they fail to marry, it means they have lost their rights. And this is unfair to them.
A Debate on Same-Sex Marriage: An Interview with Rick Santorum
The discussion on homosexual marriages in the US has been very contentious. To explore the case on gay marriages, the Pew Forum had interviewed Rick Santorum, who was a former US senator from Pennsylvania (Bell 8). He wrote a book in 2005 with the title It Takes a Family: Conservation and the Common Good. He raised the arguments discussed below.
There are many arguments that have been raised, to advocate for the homosexual marriages. Many people believe that same sexual union should not be acceptable. However, in Canada, for example, the rights of gays and lesbians are being widely accepted (Arroyo 193). The argument raised by the gays is based on the fundamental norm of equality. Their argument is that the state should accord the gays same rights as the other couples are enjoying. This is an inclusion of the civil marriage rights.
There are also some arguments that have been raised to oppose the same-sex marriages. One of the primary reasons is based on our traditional cultures. The issue of the same-sex marriage has raised a controversy. This is because this kind of couples cannot have children. The debates led to an establishment of the gay right movements in the US in the 1960s. Getting married is just a personal decision. But the controversy in this sort of debate is that gay marriage changes the existing norms and challenges the current laws and the religious teachings on the concept of marriage (Arroyo 197). Many of the religions worldwide base their argument on gay marriage on the ground of molarity. Their belief is what is wrong and right as it is recorded in the holy books. The view of the church on child adoption is some injustice since the child will obviously lack the proper moral upbringing.
Every person has a right to acquire equality and freedom as the fundamental law. Moreover, some of the leaders are insisting in legalizing same-sex marriage since they believe on the principle of equality. Personally, I do not think it is right to legalize homosexuality. First and foremost, it is against the Christian teachings. This is because, the holy books such as the Bible and the Quran, apparently gives a guideline on the Christian way of life by marriage. Christians believe that God wants a marriage between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:22-24). Legalizing gay marriages is also going against the traditional culture on the concept of marriage. Despite the fact on equality in the human rights, people should look into the definition of marriage, emphasizing on the key words in the definition. In this case, I can describe marriage as a union connecting two people; and the two persons must be a man and a woman. By legalizing same-sex marriage, one should have interfered with the legal purpose of marriage, which is majorly for procreation. The holy books, more especially the Bible, is the issue of child adoption (Genesis 1:28; 2:24). This is because a child brought up by homosexuals will not be morally upright.
Conclusion
To conclude, the issue of homosexual marriages has raised a lot of debates for quite some years. Gay marriage has been legalized in countries such as Canada. Although it is condemned in countries such as the USA, some leaders are insisting that it should be legalized since they believe on the principle of equality. In the holy books’ teachings, it is believed that marriage should be between two people, a man and a woman. Therefore, granting the gay couples legal rights will be regarded as a threat to the traditional meaning of family.
